Prison Island (Changuu)

Prison Island

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Stone Town, Zanzibar. Located just 5.6 km (3.5 miles) off the coast, this small island has a rich and interesting history, beautiful beaches, and is home to the famous giant tortoises. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a relaxing escape, Prison Island offers something for everyone.

History of Prison Island

Despite its name, Prison Island was never actually used as a prison for criminals. The island was originally bought by the Sultan of Zanzibar in the late 19th century and was intended to be a prison for rebellious slaves. However, it was instead used as a quarantine station for people with yellow fever and other contagious diseases. The prison buildings still remain on the island today and serve as a reminder of its intended purpose.

Visitors can explore the old prison ruins, walk through the rooms that were once intended to hold prisoners, and learn more about the island’s past. While the prison was never used as a jail, it has a rich history linked to Zanzibar’s slave trade and its role as a quarantine site.

 Giant Tortoises: A Living Attraction

One of the main reasons people visit Prison Island is to see the giant Aldabra tortoises. These incredible creatures were brought to the island as a gift from the British governor of Seychelles in 1919, and they have lived there ever since. Today, the island is home to over 100 giant tortoises, some of which are more than 150 years old!

These gentle giants can weigh up to 250 kg (550 lbs) and are slow-moving but fascinating to watch. Visitors are welcome to feed and interact with the tortoises, making it an unforgettable experience. There is also a tortoise sanctuary on the island where baby tortoises are raised and cared for to help protect the population.

Prison Island is easily accessible from Stone Town by boat. The boat ride takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and many local tour operators offer trips to the island. Some tours also combine a visit to Prison Island with a stop at a nearby sandbank or snorkeling site, making it a full day of fun.

The best time to visit is during the dry season (June to October), when the weather is pleasant and the sea is calm, but the island can be visited year-round.
